As an American Overseas Trained Teacher, I was
searching aimlessly for an opportunity to begin my
teaching career in the UK. I found the information
for Empowering Learning on the Newham Website and
gave them a call. The first thing I noticed was the
personal way in which my situation was dealt with.
Before Empowering Learning, I was not having much
success with interviewing for Class teacher posts.
Although I have ten years experience, most agencies
would not even talk to me because I didn’t have QTS.
I was supply teaching, but needed a recommendation
from a school in the UK.
After my interview with Debbie at Empowering
Learning, I realised that I had a goal in mind and
wouldn’t let anything, not even QTS, come in the way
of reaching it. Debbie and I discussed what my
strengths were and I was provided with a course
specifically designed for Overseas Trained Teachers
that covered the core requirements for gaining QTS.
Plus, I had the opportunity to liaise with teachers
from all across the world.
I also successfully completed a two month work
experience at a primary school in South West London.
I worked cooperatively with an experienced Class
teacher and learned essential skills and knowledge.
I was also able to do what I love more than
anything-TEACH! At the end of the experience, I had
an excellent reference.
Presently, I am determined to reach my goal of
having a post for September. I am kept abreast of my
situation through emails and personal phone calls by
both Debbie and Kay. I have also worked tirelessly
with Kay on making my personal statement tailor-made
for the school I want to teach in. Lynne also helped
me by revising and making sure it was ready to be
sent in the morning.
Debbie, Kay and Lynne are determined individuals.
They help you to develop your skills as teachers and
provide you with personalised attention. I cannot
