Nationality: Polish
Having had a lot of experience of teaching English
in Poland, I felt extremely frustrated being stuck
in a dead-end TA job in one of the secondary schools
in North West London. Luckily, a friend of mine
came to my rescue and told me about an agency that
helps overseas teachers.
That’s how I came into contact with Empowering
Learning. I registered with them in September 2007
and after the interview with Ms Hannigan I had high
hopes of finding a teaching job.
A job opportunity arose a few months later when
the agency suggested I should apply for a post in
a secondary school in East London. You can imagine
my excitement when I was short listed for interview
there and two weeks later offered the job of Bilingual
Family Worker.
What let me perform well in the interview was a
practice session with Ms Hannigan during which we
discussed strategies for a successful interview.
I have been in Little Ilford School since September
2008 and I have found working in the EMA Department
very close to my heart. Although, it is not actually
a teaching job, I am a Family Learning Worker. I
enjoy the variety that comes with it: supporting
students in lessons, teaching English and Polish,
liaising with parents, translating and interpreting.
After one term, as the school is aware that I am
a qualified teacher, my responsibilities and salary
are to be reviewed.
It is definitely a stepping stone for me, a move
in the right direction and it would not have happened
without the invaluable help of Ms Hannigan and Empowering
Learning.
At the moment I am attending weekly training sessions
organized by the agency and gaining more and more
insight into the English school system
