GCSE Family Language Project: An extended
school programme which empowers both children and
their parents
Empowering Learning’s GCSE Language Project is
a unique programme.
Children with only speaking and listening skills
in their home language; adults with little formal
education; adults who lack the confidence to join
ESOL classes; parents nervous about approaching
school; all have been shown to blossom in these
classes.
The programme initially ran in Hackney, where Turkish-speaking
children were underachieving. It is now also firmly
established in Islington. Feedback from schools
and parents is overwhelmingly positive.
Empowering Learning has set up similar projects
for Bengali, French, Persian and Somali speakers
and is preparing similar programmes, focussing on
hard to reach families across London.
